Sara Millis
Freelance Content Writer
Hi, I'm Sara.
I am a freelance copywriter writer by day, working with passionate business owners to help them get the word out on how they can help people. I believe in that, the helping people bit. It's what I have always lived by.
Industries I have created copy or content for include; Accounting, AI software development, App and Software Development, Arts and Crafts, Ballet, Beauty, Bridal, Building Industry, Charity Organisation, Event Organisation, Food, Funeral Services, Gardening, Home Care, Hospitality, HR, Interior Design, Leadership Speaking, Literature, Sports and Fitness, Transport, Travel, UX Design, Van-life, Well-being (and Wellness) and Web Design.
My Story So Far
I always thought my path into marketing was an obscure ramble through the woods, rather than a straight roman road. Unique, my mother would call it. Until that was, I attended a copywriter webinar with several renowned senior copywriters. Listening to them speak it dawned on me that marketing pulls from lots of different points of view.
Growing up I always wanted to be a fashion designer and I meticulously planned my route from grammar school all the way to employment. I went for it and I got it, working with famous British Fashion Designers. In 2006, I decided to go freelance and work with a range of clients across the industry, which opened me up to design and selling skills from every retail level. It was truly fascinating! As a designer, I was responsible for seasonal collections, not just in their inception and production, but also indirectly in their marketing and sales.
Around the same time, in mid-2006, I started a side business called ‘Sara’s Texture Crafts’, which would unknowingly lead me down a new path by mid-2007. One I hadn’t quite planned on - running a product business. This meant a lot of firsts for me, from learning to create a community around my business to nurturing them through online platforms, whether that was social media, email marketing, or website and product copy, or blog posts. After a year, I was full-time, allowing me to move from London to Devon to work on that ‘work/life balance’ people wax lyrical about. I think I found it somewhere on the rugged Tors of Dartmoor!
This successful eleven-year experience taught me so much and set the foundations for my online marketing skill base today.
In 2017, I sold Sara’s Texture Crafts to start working with fellow craft business owners to show them how to bridge the gap between part-time ‘oh, I have a little Etsy shop’ to full-time entrepreneurs with a sizable turnover. I learnt very quickly that this demographic needed foundations and strong marketing skills to support their growth; this is how I mentored them.
Then came March 2020. March 2020 will bring a sweat to any business owner’s brow and for me, it was no different. I lost 95% of my clients during the first few days of lockdown, and I knew that we had no idea how long the pandemic would last. I had to think quickly to save myself from that initial punch in the gut. I remembered my little black book of contacts and the number of business owners from outside the craft industry who had said that they would pay for me to come on board and handle their marketing. I gave a few a call, to test the waters with a new service option and found myself sighing with relief to hear that they were still very interested. The rest as they say is history, and you can see where I stand today.
In a roundabout way, all of my previous careers, as varied as they seem, actually encompassed a lot of audience building, marketing and selling. To find myself a freelance digital marketing copywriter I’m simply putting my existing skills to work for a range of business clients, from a wide array of industries.
And I’m happy. I wake every day to retainer clients and one-off project work, which allows me to be creative and yet strategy driven. I get to experiment (measured of course) on how to bring in the results my clients need. And they are happy.
If you find yourself on LinkedIn look me up. You can see my work history in detail if you’d like a nose!
